The Gesellschaft gegen Gewichtsdiskriminierung e.V. (German Association against Weight Discrimination) is a socio-political association that aims to improve the social acceptance of fat people and to counteract discrimination based on body weight. It was founded in 2005. We do not regard fatness as a deficit. Rather, we understand fatness as a human rights issue. We provide information and advice, draw public attention to the topic, point out alternatives to discriminatory language and demeanor and do preventive work against weight discrimination. Since 2016, the German Association against Weight Discrimination has been campaigning for the inclusion of weight into the General Equal Treatment Act (GETA) and into State antidiscrimination laws.

Founded in 1936, SPSSI is an international group of psychologists, allied scientists, students, and others who share a common interest in research on the psychological aspects of important social issues. SPSSI seeks to bring theory and practice into focus on human problems of the group, the community, and nations, as well as the increasingly important problems that have no national boundaries. The Academy for Eating Disorders is a global professional association committed to leadership in eating disorders research, education, treatment, and prevention. BE REAL’s MISSION is to spread body confidence across the entire USA, so every child can grow up with a healthy relationship to food and their body. Our BodyKindTM curriculum is a research-based and tested 4-lesson high school body image curriculum. Our Ambassadors Program deliver our Body Confident Schools and Body Confident Kids workshops on body confidence to the adults (educators and parents) in children’s lives. The National Alliance for Eating Disorders (formerly The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness) is the leading US national nonprofit organization providing referrals, education, and support for all individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones. Since October 2000, we have worked tirelessly to raise awareness; eliminate secrecy and stigma; promote access to care; and support those susceptible to, currently experiencing, and recovering from eating disorders. The Alliance provides free access to care through recovery-focused clinician-led programs including referrals through our helpline support groups and educational training for communities and healthcare providers. In operation since 2002, Hope’s EDS is a registered charitable organization committed to helping those living with an eating disorder, and disordered eating, along with their caregivers, friends and family. Our pillars of service include providing online resources to assist with navigating the healthcase system. We offer public education and outreach to raise awareness and to help end the stigma associated with this illness. Focussing on early intervention we recently launched a workshop for adolescent girls to encourage positive body image, self care and media literacy.

The Eating Disorders Foundation of Canada was established in 1995 by President Emeritus, Dr. Robbie Campbell and is a national, not-for-profit registered charity. NIED is the voice for Canadian families, caregivers and individuals who are challenged by Eating Disorders and other co-morbid and concurrent diagnoses. The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) is the national organization focused on providing leadership in the recognition, prevention, and treatment of Binge Eating Disorder (BED). The Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders

is a BC-based charity of prevention and support for those suffering from anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders — and those who love them. PlusInc is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia (E.I.N. # 46-4104034) promoting a size-friendly society without discrimination or stigma (IRS 501c3 Determination pending approval). Our mission is to promote the equal and fair treatment of people of all sizes. Our purpose is to promote size-friendly public policy initiatives, educate stakeholders about size-friendly products and services, and combat size-related discrimination and stigma through public education activities.

Hate Free Culture is a project founded in 2014 by the Agency for Social Inclusion and funded by the EEA and the Czech government. Hate Free Culture targets young people and works closely with schools and using social media to raise awareness, provide information, and counter hoaxes and misleading or false news stories. Innovatively, they also reach out to haters online, conducting interviews with them and asking why they feel the way they do. Their goal is to bring people together, take on difficult conversations, and work for a more inclusive society. The project has given rise to Hate Free Art, Hate Free Zones, a Hate Free Fest branding for festivals, amongst other outputs.

Journals

Body Image is an international, peer-reviewed journal that publishes high-quality, scientific articles on body image and human physical appearance. Body image is a multi-faceted concept that refers to persons’ perceptions and attitudes about their own body, particularly but not exclusively its appearance. The journal invites contributions from a broad range of disciplines – psychological science, other social and behavioral sciences, and medical and health sciences. The journal publishes original research articles, brief research reports, theoretical and review papers, and science-based practitioner reports of interest. Fat Studies is the first academic journal in the field of scholarship that critically examines theory, research, practices, and programs related to body weight and appearance. Content includes original research and overviews exploring the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability, and socioeconomic status. Articles critically examine representations of fat in health and medical sciences, the Health at Every Size® model, the pharmaceutical industry, psychology, sociology, cultural studies, legal issues, literature, pedagogy, art, theater, popular culture, media studies, and activism. Fat Studies advocates equality for all people regardless of body size. It explores the way fat people are oppressed, the reasons why, who benefits from that oppression and how to liberate fat people from oppression. Fat Studies seeks to challenge and remove the negative associations that society has about fat and the fat body. It regards weight, like height, as a human characteristic that varies widely across any population. Fat Studies is similar to academic disciplines that focus on race, ethnicity, gender, or age.

Psychology of Women Quarterly (PWQ) is a feminist, scientific, peer-reviewed journal that publishes empirical research, critical reviews and theoretical articles that advance a field of inquiry, brief reports on timely topics, teaching briefs, and invited book reviews related to the psychology of women and gender. BC Dairy Association (BCDA) has been delivering leading edge nutrition education programs and resources to teachers and health professionals in BC for nearly 40 years. These programs and materials use a positive approach to teaching nutrition. BCDA also offers teacher workshops to help address weight bias in the school setting and to support students to develop a positive body image.

The UBC School of Kinesiology Outreach Program provides community engagement and student development opportunities that deliver long term health and well-being to the UBC and Greater Vancouver community through physical activity programs supported by the expertise of the School of Kinesiology. Programs promote physical activity amongst all ages and abilities in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere and focus on evidenced-based practices. There are two programming areas: UBC Active Kids and UBC BodyWorks. The Active Kids program philosophy emphasizes positive sport experience and encourages lifelong participation in physical activity.
