Fat Talk: Coming of Age in Diet Culture Virginia Sole-Smith’s book Fat Talk examines how society instils body shame, teaching children from a young age that “fat” is bad. As people grow up, they are pressured to pursue thinness, and parents face conflicting fears. Industries profit from insecurity, while the medical field often prioritizes weight loss over wellbeing. Through conversations with experts, parents, and young people, Sole-Smith exposes the harmful impact of diet culture, encouraging a shift toward supporting individuals in their natural bodies. Her book challenges ingrained fatphobia and advocates for a healthier, more compassionate perspective on size and health.
