Keynote speakers

We are delighted to announce the keynote speakers for the 8th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference being held on 14-15 July, Berlin, Germany

  • Dr Hannele Harjunen

Dr Hannele Harjunen, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy at  the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Harjunen’s research focuses on gendered body norms, fatness and fat studies, and intersectionality. Her recent publications include a monograph Neoliberal Bodies and the Gendered Fat body (2017, Routledge) and articles in Feminism and Psychology, Feminist Theory and Fat Studies: Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society.

  • Dr Doris Leibscher

Dr Doris Liebscher, PhD, is the head of the ombuds office for the Berlin state anti-discrimination law at the state office for equal treatment – against discrimination. The qualified lawyer did her doctorate with the constitutional judge Prof. Dr. Susanne Baer on the concept of race in the Basic Law and in US constitutional law; the work was awarded the Konrad Redeker Prize. 2012-2020 research assistant at the chair for public law and gender studies at the law faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin; establishment of the Humboldt Law Clinic for Fundamental and Human Rights. 2005 co-founder of the anti-discrimination office in Saxony.

  • Dr Asher Larmie (The Fat Doctor)

Dr Asher Larmie, MD, (they/them) is a Transgender Non Binary GP and fat activist who is campaigning for an end to medical weight stigma. They are the founder of the #noweigh campaign. They have over 20 years of medical experience and have been fat for even longer than that. As the self-styled Fat Doctor, Asher started a blog in June 2020. They now also host a successful podcast and run a number of training courses as well as monthly webinars for people who are interested in learning about weight inclusivity. They have featured in a number of newspapers and magazines, and have experience speaking both on television and the radio.

Registration is open

Registration is now open. Ticket prices cover the two-day event and a reception on the first evening. There are three ticket types:

  • Standard registration: Early bird rate (until 14 June, 2022) is €80. From 15 June, standard rate will be €100.
  • Student/low income: Early bird rate (until 14 June, 2022) is €50. From 15 June, student/low income rtae will be €60.
  • To assist in developing local networks, the German Association against Weight Discrimination is able to sponsor 20 tickets for students and unfunded activists in Germany at a rate of €20. This ticket type is strictly limited, and if you are in this category but able to afford the higher-rate ticket, we’d be grateful if you would register in a higher band.

Bursary Fund – supporting accessibility

As a reminder, and across all rates, further reductions or hardship requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Weight Stigma Conference is a not-for-profit event and our ability to provide bursaries relies on the generosity of our sponsors and individual donors. A Donation button is also available on the ticketing website if you would like to make a small (or large) contribution. Donations will be used to provide financial assistance for individuals who might otherwise be unable to attend. Thank you. You may also donate on our Go Fund Me page.

To apply for a bursary, please use the Bursary Application form on our website. Standard bursary applications will be accepted until the date of the conference, with awards depending on availability of funding. A single Dr Cat Pausé Travel Bursary will be awarded. The deadline for applications is 31st May 2022. Application is via the same form.

Abstract submission

Abstract submission for oral presentations and conference sessions is now closed. We will continue to accept submissions for poster presentations until 30th June 2022, and will make acceptance decisions on a weekly rolling basis – so you will know within one week of submission if your abstract has been accepted.
