FYI. Study on weight stigma and physical activity being conducted by Christy Greenleaf, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Sharing with internal and social media networks etc much appreciated. 6th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference: Call for abstracts
The 6th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference is being held in Leeds, UK on 18-19 June, 2018. We are now accepting abstracts for oral presentations and posters, as well as session proposals including brief symposia, round tables, debates, and workshops. We are also interested in non-traditional submissions (e.g. media, performance, art). For more information about the conference, please visit: stigmaconference.com.
The Weight Stigma Conference is an inter-disciplinary event that brings together scholars and practitioners from a range of backgrounds (e.g., public health, government and public policy, psychology, medicine, sociology, allied health professions, education, sports and exercise science, social sciences, media studies, business, law, activism, and the lay public) to consider research, policy, rhetoric, and practice around the issue of weight stigma.
The 2018 Weight Stigma Conference theme is dedicated to the topic of weight stigma in public health. Public health policy and campaigns have the potential to promote health and wellbeing for all. However, in recent years, some policies and campaigns have been criticised as misguided, conflating health with body size, inappropriately singling out higher-weight people, or using blatantly stigmatising imagery.The goal of the conference will be to provide an opportunity for critical discussion about current practices and to seek strategies that will ultimately improve the development of equitable public health policies and campaigns.
We are accepting abstracts for sessions, oral presentations and posters on subjects related to weight stigma including, but not limited to:
- Weight stigma in public health
- Weight stigma in society
- Weight stigma in medical settings
- Weight stigma in research, science, and academia
- Weight stigma in the media
- Weight stigma across social identities
- Weight stigma and social justice
- Public policy implications
- Policies, interventions, and campaigns to reduce weight stigma
- Internalised weight stigma
- Impact of weight stigma on health and wellbeing
We are particularly interested in presentations related to this year’s theme. Presentations on new and emerging research in other areas pertaining to anti-fat bias are also welcome. Students are especially encouraged to submit proposals.
There are prizes for the best oral presentation and best poster.

Request for resources: International weight stigma legislation
Posting on behalf of Stephanie von Leibenstein of the German Society Against Weight Discrimination. She is seeking literature on the legal aspects of weight discrimination. She is particularly interested in any literature in the French language and/or information pertaining to the situation in countries outside Germany and the US, including the UK, Russia, and countries in South America and Africa. She is also interested in speaking to activitists advocating legal protection for fat people, especially those outside the US, Canada, Iceland, Germany, and New Zealand.

FYI. Royal Society / Leverhulme Trust: Senior research fellowships (UK)

The Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust invite applications for their senior research fellowships. These enable researchers to focus on full-time research by relieving them of all their teaching and administrative duties. Candidates may be working in all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excluding clinical medicine.
Fellowships include salary costs and research expenses of up to £2,500 to cover the cost of consumables, equipment and travel.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent and hold a permanent post at a UK university or eligible non-profit institution. They must be at a stage in their career where they have an independent research team and would particularly benefit from a period of full-time research. Mid-career candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
Fellowships are tenable for a period between one academic term and one year. A total of seven fellowships are provided each year.

FYI. Call for papers: 4th International Irish Narrative Inquiry Conference

The 4 th Irish Conference on Narrative Inquiry welcomes papers / posters / performances from across the social sciences and creative disciplines that have a theoretical, methodological and/or creative interest in narrative. The overall theme of the conference this year is on narrating neoliberalism in an Irish context. Local, national and global stories and narratives tell of the impacts of austerity; of the historical silence on institutional sexism, racism, disablism, social class and homophobia; of the fluidity of storytelling and w hat is considered ‘fact’ or ‘fiction’. In this context we invite contributions that address the ‘social role of stories’: the ways they are produced, the ways they are read, the work they perform in the wider social order, how they change, and their role i n the political process (Plummer, 1995). Themes can include:
- narratives of education
- gender and narrative
- narrative s of resistance
- narratives of health , illness and the body
- developments in the field of narrative inquiry
- political storytelling

Keynote Speaker: Professor Brett Smith
Professor Smith is the Head of Research in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences in the University of Birmingham. His r esearch interests include disability, physical activity, health, and well – being; the development of qualitative research and narrative inquiry. He is the founder and former editor of the international journal ‘Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise, & Health’. He has published extensively on narrative inquiry and sits on the editorial boards of many international journals.
Hosted by Institute of Technology, Sligo , the conference is coorganised and supported by Maynooth University and the National University of Ireland Galway. The conference aims to bring together a wide range of Irish and international scholars to show case recent developments in narrative inquiry.

FYI. British Academy Visiting Fellowships (humanities/social science; any career stage)
The British Academy is providing academics based in any country overseas (and active at any career stage and in any discipline within the humanities and the social sciences) with the opportunity to be based at a UK higher education or other research institution of their choice for up to six months. Visiting Fellows will work with colleagues at UK host institutions in order to develop new research collaborations and/or deepen existing partnerships. Awards of up to £33,000 are available.

FYI. Wellcome Trust research fellowships for health professionals

Wellcome Trust research fellowships enable practising health professionals to carry out humanities or social science research in any area of health. Fellowships are tenable between six months and three years and are usually worth up to £350,000.
Research fellowships must be held at an eligible UK, Republic of Ireland or low- or middle-income country institution. Candidates should have completed general professional training and be a practising health professional with some research experience.
